Sunday, August 31, 9:00 am ET
Last Season: Atalanta 2-2 Siena
Form: Atalanta: n/a, Siena: n/a
Summary: Siena will test their luck on the road when they travel to Bergamo on Sunday. Atalanta made headlines in the summer with the return of Christian Vieri, while Siena’s has has had to deal with the loss of some talented players, including goalkeeper Alex Manninger. Vieri has been sidelined due to a thigh injury and is not ready to return yet. The injury concerns don’t end there for Atalanta, as Azzurrini starlet Luca Cigarini is in great doubt despite being listed in the group of 18. Both sides are coming off of Coppa Italia wins, including Siena’s 4-0 rout of Albinoleffe.
Atalanta (Probable): (4-4-1-1) Coppola; Bellini, Manfredini, Talamonti, Garics; Padoin, Guarente, Cigarini, Ferreira Pinto; Doni; Floccari
Siena (Probable): (4-3-1-2) Curci; Rossi, Portanova, Ficagna, Rossettini; Galloppa, Codrea, Vergassola; Kharja; Maccarone, Calaio
Player to Watch: Emauele Calaio (Siena). The former Napoli hitman helped lead the Tuscan club in their recent Coppa win. He will bring some creativity to a generally weak Siena side.

Sunday, August 31, 9:00 am ET
Last Season: Cagliari 1-0 Lazio
Form: Cagliari: n/a, Lazio: n/a
Summary: Serie A minnows Cagliari are a leading contender in the relegation race this year. Can the Isolani pull off another suprising survival? New manager Max Allegri is confident of his side as they start the new season, but faces a tough task in welcoming Lazio to the Sant’Elia. The Roman side has a whole new look to their squad, with 21-year-old Argentine Mauro Zarate making his Lazio debut alongside captain Goran Pandev. Lazio failed to qualify for the UEFA Cup last year and will be eager to start a new season with Europe being a realistic goal. Lazio dominated Benevento in their recent Coppa Italia match by a score of 5-1.

Catania (0-0-0) vs. Genoa (0-0-0)
Sunday, August 31, 9:00 am ET
Last Season: Catania 0-0 Genoa
Form: Catania: n/a, Genoa: n/a
Summary: Genoa take a trip down to Sicily as their 2008-09 season begins on the road at Catania. We should see plenty of goals with both teams playing an attacking style of football. Catania coach Walter Zenga took over the club late last season the pressure will be on him if he wants to stay away from the ever-present Serie A sack race. Genoa have lost their main offensive threat in Marco Borriello and will now look to new signing Ruben Olivera to fill this role. Genoa have enough talent to be one of the top competitors in Serie A. Can they return to the dominant Genoa of old?
Catania (Probable): (4-3-3) Bizzarri; Sabato. Stovini, Terlizzi, Silvestri; Tedesco, Ledesma, Biagianti; Martinez, Paolucci, Mascara
Genoa (Probable): (3-4-3) Rubinho; Criscito, Ferrari, Potenza; Modesto, Juric, Vanden Borre; Rossi; Gasbarroni, Olivera; Palladino

Chievo (0-0-0) vs. Reggina (0-0-0)
Sunday, August 31, 9:00 am ET
Last Season: n/a
Form: Chievo: n/a, Reggina: n/a
Summary: Chievo battles against Reggina in what should be a tense affair in Verona. The Flying Donkeys were relgated from Serie A two seasons ago when Reggina edged out Milan on the last matchday. Reggina continued to suprise everyone by pulling off another unexpected survival last season. The Amaranto are better than the experts think. However, they will be missing Franco Brienza and Francesco Cozza in this one, so goals might be hard to come by.
Chievo (Probable): (4-3-3) Squizzi; Mantovani, Cesar, Mandelli, Malago; Marcoloini, Italiano, Bentivoglio; Iunco, Pellissier, Luciano
Reggina (Probable): (4-4-2) Campagnolo; Aronica, Cirillo, Valdez, Lanzaro; Hallfredsson, Tognozzi, Barreto, Vigiani; Ceravolo, Corradi
Player to Watch: Emil Hallfredsson (Reggina). The Icelandic international adapted well to the Seire A game last year, but injury troubles ruined a promising start. He is healthy now and hoping to score his first goal in Italy.
Prediction: Draw.
Milan (0-0-0) vs. Bologna (0-0-0)
Sunday, August 31, 9:00 am ET
Last Meeting: n/a
Form: Milan: n/a, Bologna: n/a
Summary: Milan welcome Bologna without Kaka but with several of their new signings, including Ronaldinho, Gianluca Zambrotta, and Mathieu Flamini. The pressure is on Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti after Milan’s disappointing 5th place finish last season. They are now competing in the UEFA Cup, but have their sights set on a Serie A title before anything else. Look for Ancelotti to use a 4-3-2-1 Christmas tree formation with Pippo Inzaghi starting up front over youngster Pato.
Milan (Probable): (4-3-2-1) Abbiati; Jankulovski, Kaladze, Maldini, Zambrotta; Ambrosini, Prilo, Flamini; Ronaldinho, Seedorf; Inzaghi
Bologna (Probable): (4-2-3-1) Antonioli; Bombardini, Moras, Terzi, Zenoni; Volpi, Mingazzini; Valliani, Amoroso, Adailton; Di Vaio

Sunday, August 31, 9:00 am ET
Last Meeting: Roma 4-4 Napoli
Form: Roma: n/a, Napoli: n/a
Summary: It will be an entertaining clash when two of Italy’s most popular clubs square off in the Derby del Sole. Last season the two sides battled to a historic 4-4 draw. Roma captain Francesco Totti will not be fit for the match, with Mirko Vucinic tipped to start in his place. Roma new-boys John Arne Riise and Julio Baptista are confirmed for the starting 11. Napoli recently destroyed Vllaznia Shkoder 5-0 (8-0 ag.) on Thursday in the UEFA Cup qualifying round, but should have no fitness worries for Sunday’s fixture.
Roma (Probable): (4-2-3-1) Doni; Riise, Juan, Mexes, Cassetti; Pizarro, De Rossi; Baptista, Aquilani, Cicinho, Vucinic
Napoli (Probable): (3-5-2) Iezzo; Contini, Cannavaro, Santacroce; Vitale, Hamsik, Garano, Blasi, Maggio; Lavezzi, Denis
Player to Watch: Julio Baptista (Roma). The Beast has been unleashed in Serie A. Can he produce for a Totti-less Roma side?
Prediction: Home win.
Torino (0-0-0) vs. Lecce (0-0-0)
Sunday, August 31, 11:00 am ET
Last Meeting: n/a
Form: Torino: n/a, Lecce: n/a
Summary: Newly promoted Lecce start their new season off against Torino at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday. Lecce are a favorite for relegation back to Serie B, but have the chance to grab an early season road win today. Torino have underachieved in recent memory and are also expected to struggle again this year. They hope to turn their fortunes around after signing Rolando Bianchi from Manchester City. Bianchi rejoins with former Reggina temmate Nicola Amoruso in the Torino attack. The two combined for 35 goals while at the Calabrian club. Can they repeat this feat and take Torino to the next level?
Torino (Probable): (4-3-2-1) Sereni; Rubin, Pratali, Di Loreto, Diana; Saumel, Corino, Zanetti; Amoruso, Rosina; Bianchi
Lecce (Probable): (4-4-2) Benussi; Giulatto, Esposito, Diamoutene, Angelo; Ariatti, Caserta, Giacomazzi, Feltscher; Tribocchi, Cacia
Player to Watch: Daniele Cacia (Lecce). The former Piacenza striker had success in Serie B, but lacked playing time with Fiorentina last year. He is ready to prove himself at the next level by leading the Lecce attack.
Prediction: Draw.
Fioretina (0-0-0) vs. Juventus (0-0-0)
Sunday, August 31, 2:30 pm ET
Last Meeting: Fiorentina 1-1 Juventus
Form: Fiorentina: n/a, Juventus: n/a
Summary: In the match of the week, two Scudetto hopefuls square off when Fiorentina hosts Juventus in Florence. The question has been whether or not Adrian Mutu would recover in time for this huge affair. An elbow injury has held Mutu out of action and he will not be dressing for tonights match. The Viola still have Gilardino in attack, but are greatly disadvantaged without their Romanian hitman. Juventus finished a disappointing 3rd place last year and the pressure will be on head coach Claudio Ranieri to win a Scudetto for the Old Lady this season. Both of these teams have qualified for the Champions League group stage. Don’t miss this one.
Fiorentina (Probable): (4-3-3) Frey; Vargas, Dainelli, Gamberini, Zauri; Donadel, Felipe Melo, Kuzmanovic; Osvaldo, Gilardino, Santana
Juventus (Probable): (4-4-2) Buffon; Molinaro, Mellberg, Legrottaglie, Grygera; Nedved, Poulsen, Marchisio, Camoranesi; Del Piero, Amauri
Player to Watch: Sebastian Frey (Fiorentina). The Viola shot-stopper is quietly one of the best in Serie A.
Prediction: Draw.

The Amaranto have gained a reputation around Italy for pulling off improbable survivals over the last few years.  Two years ago, they were penalized –11 points and managed to stay up due to the prolific strike partnership between Rolando Bianchi and Nicola Amoruso.  Bianchi left last season, but Nicola Amoruso remained and he lead the team to another incredible survival after two coaching changes.  The signing of Franco Brienza in January also played a great role in their second half success story.

Now Amoruso is gone and Reggina have replaced him with Man City outcast Bernardo Corradi.  Corradi was granted his wishes when he left Manchester and signed for Reggina, where he knew he would get plenty of playing time.  However, it will be a hard task for the veteran to fill the shoes of Amaranto hero Nicola Amoruso.

Aside from Corradi, Reggina haven’t added very many pieces this season.  They are counting on young talent, such as defender Andrea Costa and Uruguayan striker Christian Stuani, to lead them to salvation this season.  Another huge piece this year will once again be playmaker Franco Brienza, who netted 7 goals for the Calabrian outfit after he moved from Palermo in January.  Reggina fans are holding their breath with Brienza being a wanted man throughout Europe.  It is said that Reggina president Pasquale Foti has denied Brienza the new contract he wants, due to the fact he had signed one less than a year ago.  Brienza feels he deserves it and could be on his way out of Reggio.  German side Wolfsburg and La Liga’s Real Betis are said to be keen on Brienza’s services.  Reports are that Reggina are looking into bringing back Lazio playmaker Pasquale Foggia, a move that indicates they need a replacement for Brienza.

“Brienza remains with us,” President Foti has insisted.

No matter what happens, it will be a tough start to the season for Reggina as their captain Francesco Cozza will be out about two months with an injury.  For Reggina to be competitive, they must bring in another signing to bolster their attack.  Rumors surfaced about bringing Viola hitman Papa Waigo to Calabria, but the Senegalese player has stated his desire to prove himself with Fiorentina, even if he isn’t a regular in the starting lineup.

Reggina have lost defender Francesco Modesto to Genoa, while speedy back Salvatore Aronica is also ready to find greener pastures.  Good news is that star midfielder Edgar Barreto will be back another season for the Calabrians.  The Paraguayan national became a fan favorite for his trademark long-distance goals.  He will lead the way in the midfield, where we will also see young Carlos Carmona.  Carmona, a U-21 Chilean interntional, was the star of the Toulon tournament this past Spring and will be exciting to watch in the upcoming Serie A season.

Prediction: Mid-table (9th-13th place). Homer pick maybe? This will only happen if they hold onto Brienza and sign one more striker.  If not, it will be another relegation dogfight.

Probable Formation: 4-3-2-1
Campagnolo; Costa, Cirillo, Valdez, Lanzaro; Hallfredsson, Carmona, Barreto; Brienza, Cozza; Corradi

New Kits For 2008-09: Not yet released.

Reggina Move for Milan Starlet

paloschi.jpgReggina are hoping to land a loan deal for Milan striker Alberto Paloschi.  Reggina president Lillo Foti was in Milan to meet about the young talent.

“Paloschi is a player I like very much,” Foti said. “I met this afternoon with Milan.”

Paloschi, who scored just 15 seconds upon making his Serie A debut with Milan, is wanted by a Reggina side that are in desperate need of a goal scorer.  Milan vice president Adriano Galliani had made it known earlier in the year that they were willing to loan out Paloschi for some first team experience in the top flight, but only if other reinforcements were to arrive in his place.

Reggina are also reportedly very close to a deal with Manchester City to bring out of favor striker Bernardo Corradi to the southern side.  The Amaranto recently lost hero Nicola Amoruso to Torino and are hoping Corradi can fill those large boots.

Official: Mesto to Genoa

mesto.jpgA day after Reggina purchased the remaining 50% of Giandomenico Mesto’s contract from Udinese, he is on the move back up north to Genoa. Mesto enjoyed great success with Udinese last term and had hoped for an extended say with the Friulian club. Instead he is heading to Genoa, while Reggina in return will receive 3 million euros, full ownership of Brazilian defender Santos, as well as the loan of Brazilian midfielder Fabiano. The Brazilian pair had 44 games of experience between them for Genoa last season.

Mesto, who has been capped with the Italian national team, will have to fill in the shoes of the recently departed Genoa right wing-back Abdoulay Konko, who left I Grifoni for Sevilla after opening the eyes of many top clubs last season. Genoa has been one of the busiest teams in the summer market, verifying their desire to push for a spot in Europe next year.

Serie A Trio Accused of False Accounting

foti.jpgThe governing body of Italian football, the FIGC, announced on Thursday that prosecutors are investigating false accounting related to Genoa, Udinese, and Reggina.

Genoa president Enrico Preziosi and Udinese chief Franco Soldati are being accused of stipulating contracts for players rights with far higher value than they actually had. The FIGC prosecutor said player values were inflated to enable the two clubs to meet the financial stipulations needed to register for the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons.

Reggina President Lillo Foti (pictured) is also under the gun after being accused of inflating transfer fees so that the Calabrian club could register for the 2005-06 Serie A season.

La Gazzetta Dello Sport made no mention whether or not the the fines would be solely monetary, or if a point penalty is involved.

Reggina Fans Bid Addio to Amoruso

amoruso.jpgReggina hero Nicola Amoruso is headed for Lazio. The veteran striker, affectionately known as Nick Dynamite, is leaving the Amaranto after leading them to consecutive Serie A salvations.

“Leaving Reggina is a painful choice,” said Amoruso. “I have a great relationship with the city and the fans. Even my relationship with the President, except for a few moments of tension, has always been so good.”

Reggina are left with the daunting task of replacing their main goal scoring threat. Young Uruguayan Christian Stuani is waiting in the wings, but Reggina are already searching the market. One rumor that has surfaced is that Rolando Bianchi could make a sensational loan return to Reggio Calabria. Reggina President Foti was reluctant to let Amoruso go, but knew the decision had to be made.

“I sold him for his willingness to confront a new reality,” said Foti. “To close his career with a team like Lazio, in a city like Rome.”

Foti also played down rumors that Emil Hallfredsson will be going to Lazio. The Icelandic national has had a smooth transition into Serie A and has caught the eye of Napoli as well as Lazio.

Modesto to Genoa

modesto.jpgReggina star left-back Francesco Modesto is set to make a move up north to Genoa. The 26-year-old has been linked to several elite clubs over the past year, nearly completing a move to Roma last summer. In addition to interest from Napoli in the January transfer window, he was also rumored to be a summer target for Juventus. In exchange for Modesto, Genoa could send either of Brazilian duo Danilo Sacramento or Fabiano Lima Rodrigues to Reggio Calabria. Modesto has scored 3 goals in 104 appearences for the Amaranto, after arriving from Ascoli in 2005.
